Sending items to someone in prison

To send items to someone in a New Zealand prison, you must first get approval for the specific items by having the prisoner submit a 'request for prisoner property' form, as only pre-approved items (like certain toiletries, books, or study materials) are allowed, and you must contact the prison directly to confirm delivery times and rules, as they vary by facility and what's permitted is strictly controlled to prevent contraband.

Key Steps & Rules:

  1. Get Approval First: The prisoner must request the item (e.g., books, specific toiletries, hobby items) using the internal 'request for prisoner property' form.

  2. Contact the Prison: Before sending anything (except approved mail/email), call the prison to confirm their specific rules, delivery days, and times.

  3. Items Allowed (Generally):

    • Toiletries: Small amounts, checked for contraband, no aerosols, glass, or alcohol.

    • Books/Study: Must be approved; often sent by mail.

    • Photos: Can often be sent via approved mail.

    • Money: Send via online banking to their Trust Account; no cash accepted.

    • Phone Cards: Can be provided (although most prisons now have free phone calls)

  4. Items NOT Allowed (Generally): Cellphones, drugs, gang-related items, alcohol, cigarettes, glass, aerosols, and anything disguised as a weapon.

  5. Mail/Email: Standard letters are permitted, with paper/envelopes provided for outgoing mail; emails are screened and can be sent via specific prison addresses unique to each prison. Email address are in the link at the bottom of this page.

How to Send:

  • Property: Deliver approved items directly to the prison gatehouse during their designated times. For Manawatu Prison, items must either be taken into the PARS Office in Palmerston North or mailed.

  • Mail: Send letters (no form required) and photos (with approved forms) through standard post. Other items may also be mailed in if you live some distance from the prison and can’t deliver them personally.

  • Money: Use online banking to transfer funds to the prisoner's account.

Remember: Prison rules are strict and vary, so always confirm with the specific prison before sending anything other than standard mail.
