Dads ‘n Books - Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu

Make a meaningful difference—one story at a time.

We're looking for empathetic, dependable volunteers to join our Dads 'n Book programme, working one-on-one with fathers in prison as they create storybooks for their tamariki.

This unique initiative helps build and strengthen the bond between incarcerated dads and their children through the shared power of storytelling. Volunteers support each dad to write, illustrate, and record a personalised book, which is then sent home to their children. The experience is often emotional, always rewarding—and a vital way of maintaining connection and whānau identity during a challenging time.

What’s involved:

  • One-on-one weekly sessions inside the prison (weekday mornings or afternoons).

  • Supporting dads to choose a story, or create their own.

  • Helping with reading, writing, drawing, or recording audio versions of the book.

  • Encouraging positive parenting, connection, and creativity in a safe, respectful space.

We’re looking for people who:

  • Are good listeners, non-judgemental, and patient.

  • Can build trust and rapport in a professional setting.

  • Are confident working one-to-one, and adaptable to individual needs.

  • Are available for regular weekly visits over a 6–8 week cycle.

Full training and supervision is provided, and volunteers are well-supported throughout their involvement in the programme.

This is more than volunteering—it’s helping dads be dads, even from behind the wire.

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.
